Hyderabad: A video of riots is widely being shared on WhatsApp.
Users claim that mobs led by Muslims broke into the houses and shops of Hindus in Karnataka.
A text along with the video, written in Telugu can be roughly translated as: "Hijab vs. Saffron!! Muslim mobs looting Hindu shops and houses!! Warnings on mics from chapels that women in the house should leave all their possessions and run away!! Scenes of Muslims attacking Hindu shops and houses in Karnataka."
The claim is misleading.
NewsMeter firstly noticed that the video had a logo of 'The Sun' newspaper based in the UK.
Taking a cue from this, we performed a keyword search, which led us to a video uploaded on the YouTube channel of 'The Sun' on February 26, 2020.
The video was titled 'Delhi riots: Several killed in deadliest violence India's capital has seen in decades.'
Apart from this, we can see the visuals similar to that of the viral video from 0:45 seconds.
News related to the Delhi riots was also published on the website of BBC on February 26, 2020. The report had a few other visuals of the riot.
We then compared the visuals of the viral video and that of the original video.
We lastly searched whether any such incident took place in Karnataka. The search led us to a tweet by Times Now on February 08, 2022. According to the tweet, "#Karnataka: Stone pelting incident reported in Shivamogga."
We also found a video news report on the YouTube channel of Republic World on February 08, 2022. The video news report had also reported on the stone-pelting incident that took place in Karnataka.
Hence, the claim is misleading. Video of the 2020 Delhi riots is shared as violence in Karnataka.
