Hyderabad: A video of a man thrashing a policeman is viral on social media. Users claim the person beating up the policeman is BJP MLA Anil Upadhyay.

Fact Check

NewsMeter firstly performed a Google Reverse Image Search which led us to a video on the YouTube channel of News 19 UP-Uttarakhand. It was uploaded on October 20, 2018. It is being claimed that the hotel owner had beaten up an inspector. This hotel belonged to a BJP corporator.


We also found related news on The Quint's YouTube channel. The description of the video stated that `Caught On Camera: BJP Councillor Beats Up Sub-Inspector in Meerut'

This video was uploaded on October 20, 2018.


We then came across news related to viral videos on many news websites. On October 20, 2018, a report published by Jagran said Mohiuddinpur outpost in charge Sukhpal Singh was having food in a drunken black paper restaurant with a female advocate. After the assault, the restaurant operator and BJP councilor Munish Chaudhary were arrested.

During the investigation, we found a post dated September 10, 2021, on the Facebook page of UP Police. Police said the video is from 2018, in which a charge sheet has been filed against four accused. Please don't spread rumors by posting misleading without verification, police said



We also found an old tweet from Meerut Police. Police said the hotel owner has been sent to jail. This tweet was posted on October 20, 2018.

It is therefore evident that the viral claim is False. The viral video dates back to 2018 and the man in the video is BJP councilor Munish Chaudhary.
