HYDERABAD: A video of sanitary workers lifting garbage from an underground bin is viral on social media. Users claim that it shows an experimental garbage disposal system started by Belgaum Municipal Corporation in Karnataka.

Social media users are sharing the video with a caption in Marathi that translates to, "Innovative experiment of Belgaum Municipal Corporation. Underground garbage container."

FACT CHECK:

The video is from Turkey, not Karnataka.

NewsMeter performed a reverse image search and found a youtube video that carried the same visuals. The video was uploaded by `Hidro-Mak' on August 26, 2013. "Rear Loader Refuse Truck with Crane for Underground Container," reads the thumbnail.

The description states that Hidro-Mak is a manufacturer of garbage compactors in Turkey.

The number plate on the truck reads 34 EF 4247. Number plates that begin with 34 are from Istanbul. The words "Üsküdar Belediyesi" written on the truck also indicate that the vehicle is from Turkey as "Üsküdar Belediyesi" is a municipality in Istanbul.

The website of Hidro-Mak also mentions that the company is based in Istanbul. The company manufactures various types of garbage compactors. One of them is a Refuse Compactor with Crane for Underground Containers.

Clearly, the viral video is from Turkey, not Karnataka.

Furthermore, there have been discussions on a proposal for underground garbage containers by the Belagavi city corporation; it has not been implemented yet. https://allaboutbelgaum.com/news/underground-garbage-bin-soon-in-belagavi/
