Hyderabad: A post claiming that Tokyo is the most populous city in Asia has gone viral on Instagram. The post was originally published by the page 'facts4genius' which, as the name suggests, claims to post facts.
Fact Check:
The claim is false.
The term populous means any place which is densely populated or has a large population. Asia is the biggest continent in the world and is home to one of the most developed countries such as China and Japan. But is Tokyo, the capital of Japan, the most populous city of Asia? Read further to find out.
Tokyo is NOT the most populous city in Asia. As of 2021, the World Population Review has declared that Shanghai is the most populous city. A lot of Chinese cities like Tianjin have earned their spot on the list too. But Shanghai holds the first spot with a whopping 22.3 million residents, followed by Beijing at 11.7 million.
Many other Asian cities such as Mumbai and Delhi have also been included. Though Tokyo earned one of the top spots with a population of 8.3 million, it does not hold the title of the most populous Asian city.
Hence, the claim is false.
