FACT CHECK: Viral image of submerged cars in Nagpur dates back to 2018

HYDERABAD: An image of cars submerged in a severely waterlogged road is viral on social media.

Users claim that this incident took place at Nagpur Airport Road on July 2, 2021. The image is shared with the caption, "Nagpur airport road today".

Heavy rainfall lashed Nagpur recently. Many streets were flooded and water entered houses.

FACT CHECK:

The claim is misleading.

When NewsMeter searched on Twitter with the words, "Nagpur airport road today", the same image was found posted by several Twitter users on July 6, 2018.

This indicates that although the image was taken in Nagpur, it is not recent. In July 2018, Nagpur received heavy rains. Met Department said 27.3 cm or 273 mm rainfall was recorded in just over 11 hours in Nagpur city. The electricity service of the city was cut due to rain and this led to havoc.

The same image was also published by India Today and Nagpur Today. Many parts of Maharashtra's second capital remained were partially submerged due to waterlogging. Heavy rains hit Nagpur city and regions of Vidarbha. The state assembly session was adjourned due to flooding in the compound and the operations in the government hospital were suspended in Vidarbha due to waterlogging.

All this information makes it clear that the viral image is not recent. Nagpur witnessed rainfall and waterlogging, however, the viral image is not linked to it. The viral image was taken on the road to Nagpur airport in 2018.

Thus, the claim is misleading.
