FACT CHECK: Viral Nat Geo magazine cover featuring farmers protest is fake

HYDERABAD: A purported cover image of National Geographic magazine is viral on social media. Users claim it has the cover story about farmers protesting against the farm laws.

The image shows a man in a green turban with a text that reads: "When injustice becomes law, resistance becomes duty."

The image further mentions that the cover is allegedly a 'Winter 2020' edition.

FACT CHECK:

NewsMeter found it is not the official cover of National Geographic as the image is a piece of artwork made online.

Upon close observation, we found the watermark '@anoopreet' in the image. We then searched on various social media platforms and found an Instagram account with the name 'Anoopreet' who had shared the viral image. The caption of the image at the end reads: "Artwork: @anoopreet⠀Photo: @choudharyravi, a project in collaboration with @sikhexpo (this is an imagined cover)".

The caption clearly states that this is an artistic creation based on a photograph clicked by photojournalist Ravi Choudhary of PTI.

Ravi Choudhary had posted this picture on Instagram on December 27, 2020, with the caption, "The Green revolutionaries of 2020!"

We also looked up National Geographic magazine's covers from December 2020 to January 2021, but none of it matched the viral image.

Evidently, it is clear that a piece of artwork has been falsely shared as the official cover of the National Geographic magazine.
