Hyderabad: A video of five people being washed away by the floodwaters has gone viral on social media. It is being claimed that the video is from the Telugu states.

The caption reads, "High alert, heavy rains in Telugu states."

This video is going viral amid the heavy rains in the two Telugu states.

Fact Check:

The claim is false.

NewsMeter performed a reverse image search and keyword search on YouTube that led us to a video uploaded on 21 July 2011. The viral clip appears at the 0:41 mark (till 1:11). Click here and here to view the video.





The title of the video reads "Patalpani incident Indoree." The video is uploaded by Wild Films, a YouTube channel for tourism content from South Asia.

Taking that as a clue, we searched for the Patalpani tragedy and found a few articles. According to one, on 17 July 2011, visitors were at the waterfall called "Patal Pani" in Madhya Pradesh when the water level suddenly rose due to floods. Five members of a family were swept away. Meanwhile, there have been reports of people missing or being washed away by floodwaters due to heavy rains in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

According to The Times of India, heavy rains lashed Telangana and have claimed four lives so far and at least three persons who went missing in Bhadradri Kothagudem district were confirmed dead. (Also watch the video report here.)


Hence, the claim that the video of people being washed away by floodwaters is from the Telegu states is false. The video is from a 2011 incident where five people went missing at the "Patal Pani" waterfall in Madhya Pradesh.
