Fake News alert: PM Modi paid tributes to Deendayal Upadhyay, not Godse

A collage of two photos is being shared on social media claiming that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is paying tributes to Mahatma Gandhi and his killer Nathu Ram Godse.

The texts on the photos read that the PM is giving respect to the killer.

A Congress MLA, Virendra Chaudhary, from Uttar Pradesh shared the photos making the same claim.

Fact Check

NewsMeter performed a reverse image search of the second photo and found the same photo tweeted by All India Radio News. It said PM Modi paid tribute to Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay while on his visit to BJP headquarters in New Delhi.

It is evident that PM Modi is paying tribute to Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay in the second photo. Hence, the claim of paying tribute to Nathruram Godse is false.

According to the BJP's website, "Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya was the leader of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh from 1953 to 1968. A profound philosopher, organizer par excellence, and leader who maintained the highest standards of personal integrity, he has been the source of ideological guidance and moral inspiration for the BJP since its inception. His treatise Integral Humanism, which is a critique of both communism and capitalism, provides a holistic alternative perspective for political action and statecraft consistent with the laws of Creation and the universal needs of the human race."
