Fact Check: I have direct connection with God, says Rahul Gandhi? No, he was mocking PM Modi
Claim:The video shows Rahul Gandhi saying that he does not get illnesses because he has a direct connection with God.
Fact:The claim is false. The viral video is clipped. In the extended version, Rahul Gandhi was taking a jibe at PM Modi, saying the PM would claim to have a direct connection with God, which keeps him away from illnesses.

Hyderabad: Congress MP Rahul Gandhi kicked off the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections on October 29, addressing joint rallies with RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav in Sakra (Muzaffarpur) and Darbhanga. The rallies marked a show of unity for the Mahagathbandhan, which had faced reports of discord over seat-sharing.

Meanwhile, a video from a rally has been circulating on social media, claiming that Rahul Gandhi said he does not get any diseases because he talks to God and has a direct connection with Him.

In the video, Gandhi can allegedly be heard saying, “I do not get any illness; I have a direct connection with God — I talk to Him directly.”

Mocking Rahul Gandhi, an X user shared the video with the caption, “I don’t get any diseases, I have a direct connection from above, I talk directly to Jesus from above – This Pappu never fails to disappoint.” (Archive)

Fact Check

NewsMeter found that the claim is false. In the extended version, Rahul Gandhi is actually taking a jibe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

We ran a keyword search for the latest speech of Rahul Gandhi and came across a video of a joint public meeting livestreamed on the YouTube channel of the Congress leader from Darbhanga, Bihar, dated October 29.

The video shows the public meeting addressed by several Mahagathbandhan leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, Tejaswi Yadav and Mukesh Sahani.

At the 34-minute timestamp, Gandhi could be heard saying in the video: “In the last meeting, I said—before the elections, you can make Modi ji do anything you want. In the next meeting, if anyone says, ‘Modi ji, please dance on stage and we will vote for you’, he will start dancing and perform Bharatanatyam. He performed a drama, and through that drama, the truth of India was revealed. What was the drama? On one side, there is the Yamuna—dirty water—if anyone drinks it, they will fall sick or even die. No one can go into it; it is so filthy that if you step into it, you’ll immediately get an infection. But Modi ji staged a drama. He made a small pond there—did you see it? This is India for you. For elections, they will show you anything. ‘Look, brothers, I have a 56-inch chest, I’m taking a dip in the Yamuna…’”

At the 35:30-minute timestamp, the viral clip shows Rahul Gandhi, mimicking what PM Modi would say, stating, ‘I do not get any illness; I have a direct connection with God—I talk to Him directly.’

Gandhi continues: ‘And then, from behind, a pipe is installed—clean water is poured into it—and then our media friends show it: ‘Look, look! Narendra Modi ji is bathing in the Yamuna.’ However, there was a problem—someone had taken a picture of the pipe. Then Modi ji said, ‘Now I am not going there anymore…’”

From the above excerpt, it is clear that Rahul Gandhi was taking a jibe at Prime Minister Modi, sarcastically suggesting that PM Modi would claim to have a direct connection with God. However, the clipped video misleadingly presents it as Rahul Gandhi making that claim about himself.

Therefore, we conclude that the claim is false.
