HYDERABAD: A post claiming that India has surpassed China in population is viral on WhatsApp. Users claim India is now the world's most populous country with a 1.415 billion population.
March 4, 2022, the post is time-stamped at 11:58 pm. "Yesterday India overtook China being a most populated country in the world (sic)," read the post.
FACT CHECK:
The post became viral after a website `Medindia', a health and wellness website released information that India's population has crossed 1.415 billion. It claimed that the Indian population clock is being constantly updated every second based on the birth and death rates in the country. The meter records 1 new birth/ second. The only disclaimer the website has issued is that the clock does not reflect the actual population as over 2 out of 3 registered deaths in India occur at home. Around 86% of all deaths are registered. 14 of every 100 deaths in India go entirely uncounted.
However, it should be noted that Medindia is not an official source. The website is not a government website. Furthermore, reputed media outlets haven't reported such news recently. Further, the Indian government has not yet released the results of the 2021 census due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It is safe to say that the country's population count has not been released by any official source.
According to Worldometers.info, a real-time global statistics website, India has about 1.403 billion people at present. The current population of India is 1,402,754,293 as of Tuesday, March 8, 2022, and the current population of China is 1,448,645,012 as of Tuesday, March 8, 2022

However, it should be noted that India's population will surpass China's sooner or later. According to the UN's 2019 World Population Prospects, India may overtake China as the world's most populous country around 2027. India is expected to add nearly 273 million people to its population by 2050, while China's population is projected to decrease by 31.4 million, or around 2.2 percent, between 2019 and 2050.
