Hyderabad: Amid the violence that erupted in West Bengal, particularly in the Murshidabad and South 24 Parganas districts, following the passage of the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, a video has been widely circulated on social media. The footage purportedly shows Indian Army personnel arresting several individuals and raiding homes, with claims that those detained are Muslims allegedly involved in the unrest.
An X user shared the video, writing, āIndian soldiers are hunting down and arresting the Islamic invaders who committed atrocities in West Bengal ā they must not be spared this time.ā (Archive)
NewsMeter found that the claim is false, as the video is not recent and is from Bangladesh.
We noticed the vehicle with a Bengali number plate and the logo of a Bangladesh-based media outlet, BanglaVision NEWS. Number plates in regional languages on vehicles are not allowed in India.
A reverse image search of the video's keyframes revealed that it was published on the Bangla Vision NEWS YouTube channel on October 29, 2024, reporting a massive Army operation in Mohammadpur, Bangladesh.
We also found the operation reported by the Bangladeshi newspaper The Business Standard on October 29, 2024. The report includes screenshots from the video.
According to the report, the Daring Tigers Unit of the Bangladesh Armyās 23rd East Bengal Regiment detained seven individuals and seized two foreign revolvers along with several local weapons during a raid at Geneva Camp in Dhakaās Mohammadpur. The operation was launched based on a tip-off that gang leader Bunia Sohel was hiding in the camp.
Another media outlet, Kalbela, also reported that on October 28, 2024, the Bangladesh Armyās Daring Tigers Unit, comprising nine teams from the 23rd East Bengal Regiment, conducted a raid at Geneva Camp in Dhakaās Mohammadpur area. The operation aimed to apprehend drug trafficker Bunia Sohel based on a tip-off. While Sohel evaded capture, seven of his associates were detained.
