Hyderabad: As severe winter conditions intensified across large parts of north and northeast India, a video showing three men in snowsuits tied to each other with a rope and trekking a snow-clad mountain surrounded by dense fog has gone viral.
The users sharing the video claim it shows an Indian soldier deployed at the Siachen Glacier.
Sharing the video, a Facebook user wrote, “Salute Indian Army Jawan. Salute to the bravery of the soldiers in the Siachen Glacier.” (Archive)
Fact Check
NewsMeter found that the claim is false, as the video shows mountaineers climbing Pico de Orizaba in Mexico.
Source of the video
A reverse image search of the video’s keyframes led us to the same footage published by The Telegraph India on December 26.
According to the media outlet, the video shows a group of Indian mountaineers led by Narendra Kumar successfully climbing to Pico de Orizaba, the highest mountain in Mexico and the tallest volcano in North America.
Pune Times Mirror shared the video on the same date from their Facebook page, reporting that a team of Indian mountaineers, in the leadership of high-altitude mountaineer Narendra Kumar, successfully reached the summit of Pico de Orizaba in Mexico, marking a proud moment for India.
We also found the video posted on the Instagram account of Narendra Kumar on December 14. He mentioned in the caption that the video captures his team at the peak of Orizaba in Mexico.
Therefore, we conclude that the video does not show Indian soldiers deployed at the Siachen Glacier.
