A video claiming to show Iran launching a heavy strike on an Indian oil tanker is being widely shared on social media.
Claim:The video shows Iran attacking an Indian oil tanker, with visible damage to the vessel amid the ongoing conflict.
Fact:False. The video is AI-generated.

Hyderabad: The ongoing conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iran has escalated tensions in the Middle East and raised concerns about the safety of commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and nearby waters.

Reports indicate that attacks on commercial vessels have occurred in the region, including incidents involving oil tankers with Indian crew members. An Indian national was reportedly killed after Iran targeted two oil tankers—including one owned by a US firm—off the coast of Iraq overnight, further escalating tensions in the region.

The strikes also come amid Iran’s warning that ‘not a litre of oil’ would be allowed to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical energy chokepoints. The conflict has also triggered a surge of misinformation online, including fabricated visuals related to naval attacks.

Against this backdrop, a video showing a ship catching fire in the control room began circulating on social media. Users claim the footage shows Iran launching a heavy strike on an Indian oil tanker.

In the viral video, a large commercial tanker appears to be under fire, with thick black smoke rising from the deck. The visuals show explosions and apparent damage to the vessel, while crew members run across the deck in panic.

Fact Check

NewsMeter found that the claim is false. The viral video does not show an Iranian attack on an Indian oil tanker or any real incident linked to the ongoing conflict. It is an AI-generated video.

Examination of the visuals

A detailed examination of the visuals revealed several anomalies typical of AI-generated content. The ships approaching the tanker appear unnatural and inconsistent in movement. The fire and smoke behave irregularly, with flames flickering in unrealistic patterns.

Certain parts of the ship’s structure and debris appear to morph or change shape between frames. Human figures visible on the deck also display distorted movements and proportions. In some frames, body parts such as hands appear to disappear or change unnaturally.

Examination of video using AI tools

Further examination of the viral clip using AI detection tools such as Hive Moderation and Deepfake-O-Meter flagged the audio with a high probability of being synthetically generated.

Additionally, the Press Information Bureau (PIB) Fact Check unit debunked the video on March 14, confirming that the clip was created using AI technology. The PIB post stated that the claim is fake and cautioned users against sharing such misleading content.

The viral video does not show an Iranian attack on an Indian oil tanker. It is an AI-generated clip designed to appear realistic.

Therefore, the claim is false.
