Hyderabad: In the context of Women’s Day, celebrated on March 8, a photo is circulating on social media, claiming to show three male students from Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi dressed in women’s attire on Women’s Day.
The image shows three boys wearing sarees and a girl in a suit. The photo has been shared mocking ‘communist’ students dressing up on Women’s Day.
A Facebook user shared the image, captioning it, “Women’s Day greetings from the communists at JNU... Everyone is a woman.” (Translated from Malayalam) (Archive)
NewsMeter found that the claim is false. The persons in the photo are not JNU students.
Upon a reverse image search, we found the image published in various media reports in 2020. According to a report published by Asianet Suvarna News in Kannada on January 24, 2020, the image showed students from a college in Pune.
Using this clue, we conducted a keyword search and found a report published by The Indian Express on January 22, 2020, confirming that the image featured students from Fergusson College in Pune. The three students wore sarees as part of the ‘Tie and Sari Day’ at Fergusson College on January 2. The students in the image were identified as Honwadajkar, Akash Pawar and Rushikesh Sanap. The Indian Express report also clarifies that the girl student in the image, Shraddha Deshpande, wore a suit along with them.
The image was also featured in an India Today report published on January 4, 2020. According to the report, three boys from Fergusson College in Pune wore stunning sarees for the college’s annual traditional attire event, the ‘Tie and Saree Day’, and in doing so, they conveyed a powerful message about gender equality. These third-year students chose to break the norm and wear sarees to bring about a change for the event.
Therefore, we conclude that the image is from 2020 and featured students from a private college in Pune. The image has no connection to Women’s Day or Jawaharlal Nehru University in Delhi.
