Hyderabad: A video claiming to show a man being stopped from singing the National Anthem during a Congress public meeting in the presence of party senior leaders, including Shashi Tharoor and Sachin Pilot.

The video, which has been shared on the X, has the text, “How dare you sing the National Anthem in a Congress meeting? Will you vote for a Congress that stops the National Anthem like this?”

NewsMeter found that the claim is false, as the man who sang the wrong National Anthem was stopped and replaced by a woman who sang it correctly.

Did Congress stop the National Anthem during the meeting?

A reverse image search of the video’s keyframes led us to a report by India TV published on March 1, 2024. The report carried a longer version of the video and detailed the whole incident.

According to the report, in a major embarrassment, Congress’s leader and district president P Ravi, was singing the National Anthem incorrectly during the concluding ceremony of the Samaragni rally in Kerala’s Thiruvananthapuram. He was stopped and replaced by a Congresswoman, who sang the anthem correctly from the beginning.

The longer version of the video shows the same.

What other media outlets reported?

According to an India Today report of March 2, 2024, the man seen in the video singing the National Anthem incorrectly is Thiruvananthapuram District Congress President Palode Ravi. The report notes that the BJP in Kerala had lodged a complaint against Palode Ravi.

It also mentions that Ravi singing the national anthem incorrectly was widely shared on social media. Congress MLA T Siddique had intervened promptly during the programme, ensuring the correct rendition of the national anthem thereafter.

The media outlet also reported that the event was attended by senior Congress leaders, including Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, Congress leaders Sachin Pilot, Shashi Tharoor and others.

ANI and Mathrubhumi had also reported the incident in March 2024, with the same details.

Therefore, we conclude that the claim stating a man was stopped from singing the National Anthem during a Congress Party event is false.
