Media outlets and social media users shared the photo linking it to the recent earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria on 6 and 7 February.

Hyderabad: A photo of a young boy sitting on rubble is doing the rounds on social media.

Media outlets and social media users shared the photo linking it to the recent earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria on 6 and 7 February. According to reports, the death toll has crossed 16,000.

Media organisations such as Down To Earth, Lokmat Hindi, ABP Mazha, and News18 Hindi shared the photo of the boy claiming it is from the quake-hit Turkey.

Fact Check

NewsMeter found that the photo is not linked to the recent Turkey-Syria earthquake.

On performing a reverse image search of the photo, we found it on the stock image websites Shutter Stock and Adobe Stock. According to the two websites, the contributor to the photo is Zapylaieva Hanna.


After the photo went viral, Zapylaieva Hanna posted it on Facebook on 7 February and clarified that during Easter in 2018, she took the photo in an old, destroyed building in Goloseevsky Park in Kyiv.

Gulf News used the photo in an article on childhood trauma published in 2022.

It is evident that the photo dates back to 2018 and is not linked to the February 2023 earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria.
