Hyderabad: An image of a Mazar-like structure (a Muslim shrine) on a highway is being shared with allegations of land encroachment and "land jihad."

A Twitter user shared the image using the hashtag #StopLandJihad and wrote, "Humans feel the cold, not the dead, so it's better to donate sheet/blanket to the needy than to lay it on a shrine." (Translated) (Archive)

Fact Check

NewsMeter performed a reverse image search and found an identical image in an article in The Indian Express published in 2016. The road looks exactly the same, and the passing vehicles and other objects are in the same positions as seen in the viral image. However, we did not find a Mazar-like mound in the original image.

We also found the same image in articles published by Zee Biz in 2018 and The Times of India in 2021. Zee Biz has credited the image to the Press Trust of India (PTI).

For better clarity, we have highlighted the similarities between the original image and the morphed one in the collage below.

It is evident that a morphed image is being shared with the claim that a Mazar is encroaching on a highway. Hence, the claim is false.
