After Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s 133rd birthday anniversary on 14 April, an image showing his portrait hanging in the office of Russin President Vladimir Putin has gone viral on social media.

Several media users sharing the image are claiming that Putin displayed Dr. Ambedkar’s portrait in his office as an honour for India.

Fact Check

NewsMeter found that the viral image has been morphed. The original image does not show Dr. Ambedkar’s portrait in Putin’s office.

On performing a reverse image search, we found the original image on the photo stock website Alamy. The original image shows the national symbol the of Russian Federation, not Dr. Ambedkar’s portrait.

The image was published on 15 February 2017 and is captioned “Russian President Vladimir Putin holding a conference on economic issues in the Kremlin From left to right Sergei Ignatyev.”

Here is the comparison of the original image and the morphed image.


We also found a similar image of a different meeting published on 27 November 2001 in an article on the official site of the Russin President. The article is titled “Vladimir Putin chaired a Security Council session.” This image also does not show Dr. Ambedkar’s portrait.

Hence, we conclude that the viral image showing Dr. Ambedkar’s portrait in Putin’s office is morphed.
