Hyderabad: A photo of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi with alcohol and non-vegetarian food reportedly taken during the Bharat Jodo Yatra has gone viral on social media.
Taking a potshot at Rahul Gandhi, several Twitter users shared the image and wrote, "The ascetic is lost in penance." (Translated)
Fact Check
NewsMeter found that the viral image is morphed. The original photo shows Mr. Gandhi with a glass of tea and a plate of dry fruits.
On performing a reverse image search of the viral photo, we found, on the official Bharat Jodo Yatra website, an article titled "Bharat Jodo Diary" published on 7 January. The "diary" includes a tweet by senior journalist Paranjoy Guha Thakurta which contains the original photo.
Thakurta had tweeted the photo and said he met Rahul Gandhi during the Bharat Jodo Yatra when he was eating at a dhaba a few kilometres from Karnal.
It is evident that the viral photo is morphed. Hence, we conclude that the photo is misleading.
