Hyderabad: A collage of two video clips has been circulating on social media. The first clip shows a girl running away from a man, while the second shows the man limping in police custody.
The claim accompanying posts, taking a dig at the Muslim community, suggests that the man in the video who does namaz five times a day was arrested for harassing a Hindu girl.
An X user shared the video with the caption, “A devout man from Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh, who offers prayers five times a day, harassed a girl on the street.” (Translated from Hindi) (Archive)
NewsMeter found that the claim is false. Muzaffarnagar police identified the accused as Rohit from the Hindu community.
We conducted a keyword search and found that the videos were featured in reports by Dainik Bhaskar on February 5 and Aaj Tak on February 6. According to these reports, the incident took place in the New Mandi police station area of Muzaffarnagar.
The accused, identified as Rohit, was arrested within two hours of the video’s circulation online.
The Muzaffarnagar police, through an X post, stated that after the video went viral, the New Mandi police promptly acted and arrested the accused, Rohit, son of Samay Singh, from Vilayat Nagar under Bhopa police station, Muzaffarnagar, for misbehaviour and harassment.
The post also mentioned that the police registered a case under relevant sections and were pursuing further legal action. It featured a statement from New Mandi’s CO confirming that the accused was identified as Rohit.
NewsMeter contacted the New Mandi police station to inquire about the case. The cop confirmed that there was no communal angle to the incident. The accused, Rohit, is the son of Samay Singh, and all individuals involved in the case belong to the Hindu community.
We also accessed a copy of the FIR dated February 5. According to the FIR, the woman in the video filed a case against Rohit for harassing her for the past year and pressuring her to marry him. According to the BNS, Rohit was charged under Sections 78, 127(2), and 351(2).
Therefore, we conclude that the claim of a Muslim man harassing a Hindu girl in the viral video is false.
