No data to support Kejriwals claim about Singapore variant

Hyderabad: Amid the ongoing pandemic, a tweet by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has gone viral. The tweet had more than 11k retweets and more than 2k quoted tweets.

According to the tweet by the chief minister, a new form of the Coronavirus has come to Singapore and is said to be extremely dangerous for children. This virus can begin the third wave of COVID pandemic in India, the tweet said.

The statement by the chief minister was carried by mainstream media such as Hindustan Times, The Indian Express, and The Times of India.

Fact Check

The tweet by Kejriwal is misleading. There is no official data about any new form of Coronavirus in Singapore.

Vivian Balakrishnan, Singapore's foreign minister, member of parliament for Holland-Bukit Timah reshared the tweet and claimed that there is no Singapore variant.

Singapore's Ministry of Foreign Affairs also refuted the claim and issued a statement on their official website. The WHO's weekly epidemiological update as of 18 May edition did not show any variant that was linked to Singapore.

Therefore, the tweet by the Delhi chief minister is misleading as there is no new variant linked to Singapore.
