Hyderabad: A statement attributed to former RBI governor, Raghuram Rajan, is doing rounds on social media. It is being claimed that Rajan, in a statement, said that "India must get hit by recession to show inclusivity."
"Former Governor of RBI and Super Star Economist Raghuram Rajan said, India must get hit by recession to show inclusivity," wrote a user on Facebook. Mocking Rajan, the user added, "Albert Einstein once famously said: Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity. I am not sure about the universe. Very aptly said Einstein Uncle."
The claim comes after a website, The Fauxy, infamous for peddling fake news in the garb of satire published an article.
The article makes two claims: First, Rajan speaking to the website said that "India must get hit by a recession to show inclusivity." Second, Rajan wrote an article on India being cornered in which he stated: "the ways for India to remain inclusive and advised that a small recession hitting India won't impact its economy but will avoid India getting cornered." Several Twitter users have made similar claims.
Fact Check
NewsMeter ran a keyword search to find the claims attributed to the former Governor. Still, we didn't find any news report by mainstream media other than the article published by The Fauxy. The Fauxy claims itself to be an entertainment platform. All the articles published on the website are misleading and have been debunked by fact-checkers.
The disclaimer on the website says, "The Fauxy is an entertainment portal. The content of this website is purely for entertainment purposes and readers are advised not to confuse the articles of The Fauxy as genuine and true."
The 'about' section adds, "The Fauxy is an entertainment media company that connects with young, intelligent and diverse audiences that are shaping our future. Through thought-provoking comedy and high-impact storytelling, we aim to start a conversation around subjects that are usually viewed as taboo for today's youth."
Therefore, we have concluded that the claim made by the website and social media users attributing to Rajan is false.
NewsMeter has also reached out to the Rajan but has not received a response yet. We will update the story as and when we receive a response.
