An old image of debris from Turkey is being shared as recent earthquake in Morocco.

Old Image from Turkey falsely shared as Morocco earthquake

The death toll in a powerful earthquake in Morocco has mounted to 820 and injured 329, media reports suggested.

The social media is stormed with the pictures and the videos of the deadly earthquake that hit the Morocco on September 8.

An image of a debris was shared by the Advisor to the Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, Anton Gerashchenko from his verified X handle claiming that the picture is from the Morocco earthquake.




The image was also carried by several media houses claiming to show the disaster caused by the earthquake in Morocco.

Fact Check

NewsMeter investigation revealed that the image is old from Turkey, Syria earthquake.

We conducted a reverse image search on the viral image and came across several reports about the Turkey, Syria earthquake carrying the same image.

Times of India has published the same viral image with a report about the Turkey, Syria earthquake dated February 16, 2023.

We also found a report on India Today website carrying the same image stating that the image is from Kahramanmaras, southern Turkey.

Another report by wgntv.com carrying the same image also clarified that the image show destruction caused by earthquake in Kahramanmaras, southern Turkey on February 8, 2023.

Thus, our investigation revealed that the image shared as recent earthquake in Morocco is actually old and from Turkey not Morocco.
