HYDERABAD: Social media users are claiming that travel information and route maps at all Hyderabad Metro Stations are not provided in Telugu despite Telangana being a Telugu-speaking state.

Netizens claim that the Hyderabad Metro Rail (HMR) only provides travel information in the English and Urdu languages.

"Hyderabad metro train: not a single Telugu letter can be found anywhere The entire route map is written in Urdu and English. It is safe to assume it is a place for the nawabs to travel. What a mess. Are there no Telugus in Hyderabad?" the message said.

FACT CHECK:

HMR has set up boards and route maps in four languages Urdu, English, Hindi, and Telugu.

The four language system was implemented even before the inauguration of the Metro rail in 2017. According to several media reports, Metro gave provisions for signboards in Telugu, English, Hindi, and Urdu (as the city has a large Muslim population) since the beginning and is continuing.

In May 2022, the official Twitter account of the HMR shared a picture of a signboard that displayed all four languages.

Several signs boards such as the route map, destination name on the screen, customer care center, and emergency exit sign are displayed in Telugu, English, Hindi, and Urdu as well.

The HMR provides information not just in Urdu and English but in Hindi and Telugu too.
