Modi is on the first leg of his maiden state visit to the U.S. The prime minister led the International Day of Yoga celebrations at the United Nations Headquarters and held bilateral talks with US President Joe Biden in Washington. Against this backdrop, several old anti-Modi posters are being shared on social media linking them to his US visit.
Fact Check
NewsMeter found that the image was from 2022 in Berlin, Germany. On performing a reverse image search, we found that the image was tweeted by several users in May 2022. Ashok Swain, Professor of Peace and Conflict Research, tweeted the image on May 3, 2022, and accused Indian media of not showing the protest against PM Modi in Berlin.
On magnifying the viral image, we noticed ‘Starbucks Coffee’ written on one of the buildings in the background.
Taking these cues, we searched for ‘Starbucks Coffee’ and ‘Berlin’, and geolocated the outlet on Google Street View.
This proves that the viral image of a protest against PM Modi is not from the US but is from 2022 Berlin.
