Hyderabad: On 13 November, a bomb explosion in a busy area of central Istanbul killed at least six and wounded around 81 people. The police have detained 47 people, including a Syrian woman suspected of planting the bomb. Though no group has claimed responsibility so far, the Turkish government has blamed Kurdish militants for the explosion.

Against this backdrop, CCTV footage is doing the rounds on social media, claiming that it shows the recent deadly explosion in Istanbul.

A Twitter user shared the footage and wrote, "BREAKING: HUGE EXPLOSION IN ISTANBUL LIKELY A SUICIDE BOMBER, VIDEO SHOW" (Archive)

Fact Check

NewsMeter noticed the date and time mark (19/03/2016 10:57:55) at the end of the viral video, giving us the cue that the video could be from 2016.

We ran a keyword search and found a report by Aljazeera published on 20 March 2016. It said that a suicide bombing on the popular Istiklal street of Istanbul had killed at least five and wounded 36 people.

Next, we performed a reverse image search of the video's keyframes and found the same footage in an article published on 19 March 2016 by the Turkish website Milliyet. It said that the video shows security camera footage of the suicide bombing attack on Istiklal Street.

Other Turkish news portals like Haberturk and Cumhuriyet also carried screenshots of the video in their 2016 report about the incident.

It is evident that the viral video is of the 2016 suicide bombing in Istanbul and not the recent incident. Hence, the claim is misleading.
