Fact Check

NewsMeter found that the video dates back to 2019 and is from Delhi. We also found that one of the accused is a Hindu.

On performing a reverse image search of the video’s keyframe, we found the same video tweeted by the news agency ANI on 3 September 2019. It said that a woman and her daughter caught bike-borne chain-snatchers red-handed in Nangloi, Delhi on 30 August 2019. The snatchers were later arrested by the police.

Taking these as cues, we ran a keyword search and found the incident reported by NDTV on 4 September 2019. It also said that the incident took place in Nangloi in west Delhi.

The report identified the accused as Abdul Shamshad and Vikas Jain and said as per the police statement, an investigation revealed that they were involved in a large number of criminal cases. They had earlier stolen two gold chains, three motorcycles, and two mobile phones.

A Times of India report from 4 September 2019 also identified the accused as Abdul Shamshad (32) and Vikas Jain (38).

The video dates back to 2019. One of the accused is from the Muslim community and the other is from the Hindu community. From this, we conclude that the video is being shared with false information and is being given a communal twist. Hence, the claim is misleading.
