Hyderabad: Amid the Israel-Gaza war, an image showing a man holding a lifeless infant is doing rounds on social media, with users claiming that the image shows a Palestinian child who was killed by the ongoing Israeli onslaught on Gaza.
A Facebook user shared the image with the caption, āA family of 18 Palestinian people have been murdered in Gaza by the israeli regime, including 9 children. (sic)ā
NewsMeter found that the image is from Lebanon in 2006.
Upon a reverse image search, we found the image in a Turkish report by Sabah, published on August 9, 2006. The report said that a 10-day-old Lebanese baby was pulled out by rescue workers from rubble.
Taking this cue, we ran a relevant keyword search and found the same image in Getty Images published on August 8, 2006, titled āA rescue worker hands the dead body of ten-day-old Lebanese baby Waad, 08 August 2006, found in the rubble of a building hit by an Israeli strike in Beirut late 07 August 2006, while a Lebanese army soldier protects his face from the smell of death. Rescue workers used machines and their bare hands to clear the debris and recover 13 bodies from the gaping hole left by the demolished buildings after the strike. Thirteen members of the Wehbeh family were killed in the attack. (sic)ā
Here is a comparison of the viral image and the image published by Getty Images in 2006.
Hence, we conclude that the viral image doesnāt show a Palestinian child killed in Gaza. The claim is false.
