Hyderabad: A photo of a group of people holding a placard that reads “Stop Adani” is being shared online. Those sharing the photo are suggesting that there was a protest against Adani in Australia after the release of the Hindenburg report.

On 24 January 2023, a US-based forensic financial research firm, Hindenburg Research, released a report accusing the Gautam Adani-led Adani Group of “brazen stock manipulation and accounting fraud.”

After the release of the report, Adani Group lost around $111 billion in shareholder wealth in six trading days.

Twitter users shared the photo of the protest and wrote, “Protests in Australia against Adani! It’s spreading like wildfire! Only @RBI and @SEBI_India mutely following orders from their masters...” (Click here and here to see the tweets.)

Fact Check

NewsMeter found that the photo is from a protest against the Adani group organised in 2017.

On performing a reverse image search, we found the photo on the image hosting site Flickr uploaded on 7 October 2017. According to the description, people were demanding the federal government halt Adani’s enormous proposed coal mine in North Queensland, Australia.

The photo was also tweeted by Australian journalist Daniel Doody on 9 October 2017. He said hundreds of people gathered to protest against Adani’s coal mining at Congo Beach, Eurobodalla.

It is evident that the photo is from 2017 and shows a protest against Adani’s coal mining project in Australia. Hence, the claim that the photo shows the recent protest against Adani after the Hindenburg report is misleading.
