Old stock image of dog linked to recent Turkey-Syria earthquake

Hyderabad: An image of a dog sitting next to a man trapped in the rubble is being widely shared on social media. People who are sharing them are linking the photo to the recent earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria.

A Twitter user shared the image and wrote, “The photo was taken today in Turkey. One of the rescue dogs found someone under the rubble.”

Several Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram users have shared the image with the same claim.

Fact Check

NewsMeter found that the image dates back at least to 2018.

On performing a reverse image search, we found it published on the image stock website Alamy on 18 October 2018. The caption read, “Dog looking for injured people in ruins after earthquake.”

The image has been credited to Jaroslav Noska.


iStock published the image in 2019 and also credited it to Jaroslav Noska.

Getty Images also published the image and mentioned the location as the Czech Republic.

NewsMeter could not independently verify the location of the image. However, we found that the image has been on the internet at least since 2018. Hence, we conclude that the image is not from the recent Turkey-Syria earthquake, and the claim is false.
