Fact Check: Old video from Syria falsely shared as Hamas burning Israeli soldiers alive

Hyderabad: A distressing video showing two men in soldiers’ uniforms chained and burned alive by men in black clothes is being shared on social media.

BJP leader Naveen Kumar Jindal shared the video claiming that the video shows two Israeli soldiers being killed by Hamas militants.

He wrote, “See the cruel face of Hamas terrorists. This video shows the inhuman and diabolical actions of Hamas terrorists who tied up two Israeli soldiers in chains, wrapped them up in gunpowder and set fire to them. But still, some traitors are supporting Hamas. It is imperative that Hamas terrorists are eliminated. We should all support @Israel.” (Translated from Hindi)

NewsMeter found that the video shows the Islamic State (ISIS) group burning two Turkish soldiers alive in 2016.

Upon a reverse image search of the video’s keyframe, we found the video on YouTube, published by a verified channel ABP Ananda on December 23, 2016, titled 'IS releases new video of torture, sets Turkey soldiers on fire.’

Taking this as a cue, we ran a relevant keyword search and came across a 2016 report by NDTV, which carried the screengrab from the video. It is titled “ISIS Video Shows Turkish Troops ‘Burned Alive.’”

According to the report, the video was shot in the ISIS-declared Aleppo Province in northern Syria. It showed two captured Turkish soldiers being burned alive.

We also found the screengrab from the video in 2016 reports published by the New York Post and Fox News. Both news outlets reported that the video shows Turkish soldiers being burned alive by ISIS in Syria.

Hence, we conclude that the video is not recent and does not show Hamas burning Israeli soldiers. The claim is false.
