Old video of Greenland tsunami passed off as video of Turkey, Syria earthquake

Hyderabad: A video of a huge wave sweeping away a house is doing the rounds on social media with the claim that it shows a tsunami hitting the Turkey-Syria coastline.

The claim comes after an earthquake of 7.8 magnitude knocked down multiple buildings in southeast Turkey and northern Syria, killing around 500 people on 6 February.

A Facebook page shared the video using the hashtags #Earthquake, #Syria, and #Turkey.

Fact Check

NewMeter found that the video shows a tsunami hitting Greenland in 2017.

On performing a reverse image search of the videoā€™s keyframe, we found a longer version of the same video published by a verified YouTube channel, Licet Studio, on 25 April 2021. The 6-minute video shows the water retreat followed by a huge wave swallowing a red-colored house. The same visuals can be seen in the viral video. According to the caption, the video is of a tsunami in Greenland.

On 1 April 2021, the same channel had published another video shot from a different angle but showing similar visuals. As per the description, on 17 June 2017, one of the tallest tsunamis recorded in history devastated the village of Nuugaatsiaq in Greenland.

On 27 June 2017, National Geographic published a video with similar visuals. It said a deadly tsunami in Greenland washed away 11 homes and four people were presumed dead.

It is evident that the viral video dates back to 2017 and shows a tsunami hitting a remote region in Greenland. Hence, we conclude that the claim is misleading.
