Fact Check: Old video of man being stoned to death viral with false claim

Hyderabad: Social media users are sharing a video of a man being stoned to death with the claim that it is from Afghanistan where Taliban is perpetrating such horrors.

"To those who say the #Taliban have changed, watch this horrifying footage from #Afghanistan of a man being stoned to death. This is who the Biden administration is appeasing," wrote one user who shared the video.

Fact Check:

The claim is false.

NewsMeter ran a reverse search of keyframes of the video and found that many social media users had shared the video in 2018. The Persian caption of one such post broadly translates to, "A 60-year-old man accused of rape was stoned to death in Afghanistan by Islamic State militants."

Taking a clue from here, we conducted a keyword search which led us to news reports by several Persian media outlets about a 'stoning ceremony' conducted in the Darzab district of Jowzjan province in Afghanistan. According to these reports, a 60-year-old man accused of rape was stoned to death. (Click here and here for the reports)

According to a BBC report, an eyewitness said that the man was from the Mongol village of Darzab district. His body was buried without any prayers being recited. The incident took place in February 2018.

Hence, the claim that the video is recent and shows the Taliban stoning a man to death is false.
