What’s the fuss about ‘The Kerala Story’?
It’s a story of a converted Muslim woman Fatima Ba who narrates her ordeal of how she once wanted to become a nurse but was abducted from her home and manipulated by religious vanguards, turned into an ISIS terrorist, and landed in Afghanistan jail.
But being such a sensitive topic, the film has also attracted some communal backlash and bans.
On 8 May, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee announced the decision to ban the screening of the movie “to avoid any incident of hatred and violence, and to maintain peace in the state.”
Moreover, the movie has not been banned in Tamil Nadu. Theatre owners have decided not to screen it over law-and-order concerns, a move that the makers claimed was a “de facto ban.” (Source: Live Law, NDTV)
Fact Check
NewsMeter found the claim to be false as the video is years old.
By performing a simple reverse image search, we found the stills of the viral video on a report by OneIndia. It relates to a harassment case in Koduru district, Karnataka. The title of the Hindi report translates to “
The report further reads, “A Muslim youth named Mohammed Munasir was harassing a Hindu woman in Madikeri, Karnataka by sending her obscene messages. The woman thought to teach the young man a lesson, fed up with the bad behavior.”
Interestingly, the reports date back to 18 September 2020, which clearly indicates that the viral video has been shared with a false narrative.
We also found a tweet along with the same video from 2020. It states, “Muntashir Ahmed, a Coorg Muslim from Karnataka, used to talk obscenely to a Hindu married woman over the phone. The clever woman talked to him lovingly and called her to meet at a place…”

The Times of India and NewsJ had also reported the incident.
Evidently, the viral video is unrelated to the film ‘The Kerela Story.’ An old video is being shared with a false narrative.
Hence, the claim is false.
