Hyderabad: Several regions in India are currently experiencing heavy rains and flooding. Authorities in Mumbai have issued a red alert due to the heavy rains. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that the heavy rains will continue till July 12.
Against this backdrop, several old videos of heavy rains and flooded streets have gone viral claiming to show the present extent of rains in Mumbai.
An X user shared a video titled, āMumbai rains are scary.ā
Fact Check
NewsMeter found that the claim is misleading. The video shows the Mumbai floods in 2020.
A keyword search led us to a report from International Business Times titled āMumbai sinking: High tide hits Marine Drive, roads flooded, a landslide at Malabar Hillā, dated August 6, 2020. The report had a screenshot of the video that showed a partially submerged car. Here is a comparison image.
According to the report, Mumbai experienced heavy floods and traffic jams due to heavy rains. The report also said at least 250 commuters were stranded in two trains between Byculla and Masjid Bunder stations and were rescued by police and disaster teams on rubber boats.
Additionally, we found a video published on a YouTube channel titled āMumbai Maharashtra Rain 2020: Flood in Mumbai video street, shops and road water logging everywhereā. It was published on August 7, 2020. The first section has visuals from the viral video. The YouTube video also showed the same partially submerged car mentioned earlier. It also showed rows of bikes submerged in water, also seen in the viral video.
Here is a comparison image.
Also, comparing the viral video with images from
Google Maps confirmed that the location in the video is 18 Cawasji Patel Tank Rd in Mumbai, where the 2020 floods occurred.
Hence, the claim is misleading. The video shows floods in Mumbai in 2020, not 2024.
