HYDERABAD: A video allegedly showing Assam Police chasing, beating, and arresting Muslims for demanding a separate nation is viral on social media.
The video allegedly shows police chasing the Muslim men who organized a march in Assam to demand a separate country.
Netizens said that this video shows how the police take action under CM Himanta Biswa Sarma.
FACT CHECK:
A reverse image search led to news reports by Republic World and Times Now from April 2020 that state the incident took place in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh.
The incident took place in the first phase of the Covid-19 pandemic. Police were enforcing the lockdown and asking everyone to remain inside closed doors. About 20 people flouted prohibitory orders. Instead of dispersing, they attacked the police.

According to a Punjab Kesari report from on 07, 2020, when the mob refused to listen to the policemen and began attacking them, the SP (City) reached the spot with a heavy force and chased away the crowd. This is what is seen in the viral video.
An FIR was registered against 150 people for attacking policemen and attempting to torch a police post. Forty-two people were later arrested. Abhishek Verma and other policemen were injured.
The viral video only shows half the story. Police resorted to lathi-charge to chase away the crowd because they refused to adhere to the Covid-19 lockdown. The mob attempted to torch a police post. This has nothing to do with Muslim men organizing a march in Assam for a separate country.
The video is from Uttar Pradesh's Bareilly district and not Assam. It was shot in April 2020, when cops retaliated after being attacked over Covid-19 restrictions.
