Old video of SRK commenting on his Pathaan lineage goes viral with misleading context

Hyderabad: A video of Shah Rukh Khan speaking in front of Indian and Pakistani cricketers has gone viral on the internet.

In the viral video, SRK can be heard saying, "I want to tell you all that my father is from Peshawar, Pakistan. Though I don't look, I am a Pathaan, too. This is not to create any controversy. When you people (Pakistan) win, it feels like my father's side has won."

Social media users have shared the video using the hashtag #BoycottPathaan. They claim that it shows SRK's love for Pakistan.

The video comes amid controversy around SRK's upcoming film 'Pathaan.' A section of social media users have been running a campaign to boycott 'Pathaan.'

Fact Check

NewsMeter performed a reverse image search of the video's keyframe and found an extended version of the same video uploaded on YouTube on 16 October 2009. It shows SRK sharing the stage with former Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh and pulling the legs of Pakistani cricketer Shahid Afridi.

At around the 0.50-minute mark, SRK can be heard saying, "I want to tell you all that my father is from Peshawar, Pakistan. Though I don't look like, I am a Pathaan, too. This is not to create any controversy. When you people (Pakistan) win, it feels like my father's side has won. But when our India wins, it feels like my mother's side has won."

We also found another video on YouTube titled "Chak de Yaara. An example of India-Pakistan Friendship." In this video, the viral clip appears at around the 33:20-minute mark, which is followed by SRK saying, "But when our India wins, it feels like my mother's side has won."

It is evident from both these videos that the part in which SRK speaks about India and his mother has been removed to mislead the people.

Finally, we searched for "Chak de Yaara" and found it was an event hosted by SRK when Pakistan visited India in 2007 to play a five-match ODI series and a three-match Test series.

Hence, we conclude that a clipped video of SRK is being shared with misleading context ahead of the release of his upcoming film 'Pathaan'.
