A video showing gigantic water waves is going viral on the internet. Social media users claim that it shows cyclone Biprjaoy in Gujarat.
A Pakistan-based Twitter handle, PakWheather, shared the video and wrote, “Under the influence of very severe cyclonic storm "Biparjoy" in the Arabian sea which is passing nearby Gujarat coast, quite extreme sea-tides are being observed at Madhavpur (Gujarat).”
Several other Twitter users shared the video claiming the same. (Click here, here and here to see the archived versions of the posts. )
Cyclone Biparjoy is the only third cyclone in nearly 60 years to hit the western coast. According to IMD, it will cross India near Jakhau Port on June 15 and is likely to make landfall near Kutch in India and move towards Pakistan.
Fact Check
NewsMeter found that the video is old and is from San Sebastián, a resort town in the Bay of Biscay in northern Spain.
On performing a reverse image search of the video’s keyframe, we found a video of high tides posted by Facebook users of what appeared to be from the same location. The user claimed that the video is from Spain.
“It’s the Northern part of Spain. It happens roughly twice a year. Due to deep water pressure, the waves can reach up to 24m in height. Enjoy the wall of water. The beauty of God's creation…,” reads the caption of the video.
Another Facebook user shared a video of high tides from the same location. He mentioned that the video shows strong waves that hit the Paseo Nuevo area of San Sebastian in Spain.
An image published by the stock image site, Getty Images, showed similar strong waves hitting the Paseo Nuevo in San Sebastian.
Finally, we found the Street View of Paseo Nuevo and found the visuals similar to as seen in the viral video. The sculpture visible on the left side of the viral video is ConstruccionVacia, designed by Spanish sculptor Jorge Oteiza and the island behind the sculpture is Santa Clara in San Sebastian, Spain.
Here is the comparison of the visuals from the viral video and the stock website.
Hence, we conclude that the viral video is from Spain and the claim that the video shows Cyclone Biprjaoy in Gujarat.
