Hyderabad: Amid the ongoing Meiti-Kuki conflict in Manipur, a video of a man and a girl singing an old Hindi film song together is doing rounds on social media with the claim that the singers in the video are from the two communities.
Public interest lawyer and activist Prashant Bhushan shared the video with the caption, āHow lovely and melodiousā¦..We are Humans first. Rest is notional. One of them is a Kuki and the other is Meitei from sizzling Manipur. The beauty of diversity & Love. (sic)ā
Fact Check
NewsMeter found that the video features a father-daughter duo from Dehradun singing the duet.
We skimmed through the comments on Bhushanās post and found a user commenting that the video showed a father-daughter duo and they are from Dehradun. The user also provided a link to the verified Facebook page of Shekinah Mukhiya, the singer in the video.
We looked for the video on Shekinahās Facebook page and found it posted on May 24. The video is captioned āMe and Papa decided to cover this beautiful song Hum apki ankhon main.ā
We also found the video published on Shekinahās YouTube channel on May 25.
Shekinah is aware that her video is being shared in the wrong context. On August 7, Shekinah, on her Facebook page, shared the screengrab of Bhushanās post and said that the individuals in the video are herself, Shekinah Mukhiya and her father, Vikash Mukhiya. She also said that they are not from Manipur and have no association with the Kuki or Meitei communities.
According to her Facebook page, the father-daughter duo is based out of Dehradun. We also checked her Instagram page and found her singing duets with her father in many videos.
Hence, we conclude that the viral video does not show two members of the Meiti and Kuki communities singing a duet. The claim is false.
