Photo of Cersei & Jamie from Game of Thrones passed off as photo from Turkey earthquake

Hyderabad: Another photo has joined the trial of unrelated pictures that have gone viral after the Turkey earthquake. Following the recent devastating earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria on 6 and 7 February 2023, several unrelated pictures depicting the destruction of lives and property are being shared by social media users.

One viral picture shows a dead couple buried under the rubble. The caption translates to, “Love is really beautiful — Two love flowers entwined in Turkey’s horrific earthquake.”

Fact Check

NewsMeter found that the viral video is from the famous HBO series ‘Game of Thrones’ and not the Turkey earthquake.

On performing a simple reverse image search, we found the same photo on Twitter and Pinterest uploaded in January 2020.

A Yandex search led us to a picture album of ‘Game of Thrones.’ The page describes the images and the characters as “Jaime and Cersei meet their faith and destruction of the Red Keep. Highly detailed, life like prosthetic dummies of Cersie and Jaime were used for this image of the Lannister siblings in the aftermath of Daenerys’s attack on Kings Landing.”

Taking the web series ‘Game of Thrones’ as a cue, we ran a simple keyword search and found multiple similar images on a website called Belfast Exposed.

From this, it is evident that a photo from the popular series ‘Game of Thrones’ is being shared as a photo from the recent Turkey earthquake. Hence, the claim is false.
