Photos of woman's dead body in freezer are not from Assam

Hyderabad: Disturbing images of a dead woman inside a freezer are widely circulating on social media. It is being claimed that a girl was raped and murdered by his live-in partner Gaffar and his aides in Assam.

Social media users shared the photos and recalled the gruesome murder of Shraddha Walker.

Several users shared the photos and wrote, "Another Shraddha found in a freezer in Assam…Ghaffar Miyan, with seven Muslim boys, raped his live-in partner Kajal and packed her alive in a freezer in a state of unconsciousness…"

NewsMeter ran a keyword search to see if any such recent incident had been reported in Assam but did not find any news reports.

We then performed a reverse image search and found the images in a blog post from 2010. The blog did not mention the place and date of the incident. According to a Portuguese blog that carried the same photos, a 45-year-old man killed his wife and kept her body in a freezer at his home in Osasco in the Greater São Paulo region of Brazil.

We also found a tweet by the Assam police which said that an image from a Portuguese blog is being shared with false context on social media. They also warned that action will be taken against those sharing the false message. The tweet has a link to the blog with the viral images.

NewsMeter could not independently verify the year and place of the incident. However, we found that the images have been on the internet since at least 2010. Also, as per the Assam police, the incident did not take place in Assam. Hence, we conclude that the claim is false
