Picture of Joe Biden enjoying ice cream in Ukraine is morphed

Hyderabad: Ahead of the first anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, US President Joe Biden made a surprise visit to the war-torn country on 20 February. He met Ukrainian counterpart President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and assured of the “unwavering and unflagging commitment to Ukraine’s democracy, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.”

Against this backdrop, an image is being shared with the claim that it shows Joe Biden enjoying ice cream in Kyiv during his visit to Ukraine.

A Facebook user shared the photo and wrote, "This is a COOL pic of President Biden enjoying an ice cream cone, a chocolate one, in Kyiv, Ukraine!"

Fact Check

NewsMeter found that the viral photo is morphed. The original photo dates back to 2021 and shows Biden eating ice cream at an ice cream parlor during his visit to Cleveland, Ohio, United States.

On performing a reverse image search, we found the original image in a report by New York Post from 27 May 2021. The original photo does not show a Ukrainian restaurant, KyivskaPerepichka, in the background.

The description of the photo read, “President Joe Biden eating an ice cream cone in Cleveland, Ohio, on May 27, 2021.”

Further, we searched for the Ukrainian restaurant Kyivska Perepichka and found it is one of the most popular street food corners in Kyiv. We also found several images of the restaurant, and one of the images is identical to the background seen in the morphed photo of Joe Biden eating ice cream.

It is evident that the image of Joe Bide eating ice cream has been digitally superimposed on another image that shows a restaurant in Kyiv, Ukraine. Hence, we conclude that the claim that the photo shows Joe Biden eating ice cream during his visit to Ukraine is misleading.
