Fact Check: PM Modi endorses Narayan Murthy’s investment project to make Indians millionaires? No, video is AI-manipulated
Claim:The video shows PM Modi endorsing the investment project of Narayana Murthy, which will help Indians generate additional income and become millionaires.
Fact:The claim is false. The audio of the video has been manipulated using AI.

Hyderabad: A video circulating on social media shows prime minister Narendra Modi endorsing an automated investment project created by businessman Narayana Murthy, which allegedly allows Indians to earn up to Rs 1.5 million per month.

In the video, Modi is heard saying, “Imagine the possibility of earning Rs 1.5 million a month. Every Indian who opens an account with an initial deposit of Rs 21,000 by the end of this month will have a chance to turn this dream into reality. This opportunity has been made possible by Narayana Murthy, who has developed a system that automatically grows users’ funds.”

Murthy appears in the same video, stating, “I want to introduce you to an automated system we have been developing over the past two years. It is already generating additional income for many people across India. While I can’t promise millions overnight, earning Rs 50,000 daily is realistic—that’s Rs 350,000 a week or Rs 1.5 million a month. This is a game-changer for anyone reading this post…”

The text overlaid in the video reads: “Modi has instructed Narayana Murthy to do the project. Every citizen of India who invests 21,000 rupees in this project will receive 1,500,000 rupees in the first month.”

Fact Check

NewsMeter found that the claim is false, as clips of PM Modi and Murthy are from two different videos that have been stitched together, and the audio has been manipulated using AI.

We observed several jump cuts in the video, along with different backgrounds in Modi’s and Murthy’s clips. Additionally, their lip movements did not sync with the audio—clear indications that the clips were taken from separate videos and stitched together, with the audio in both segments manipulated.

PM Modi’s clip

A reverse image search of keyframes from Modi’s clip led us to a longer version of the video, published on his official YouTube channel on May 12, 2022, titled ‘PM Modi’s speech at inauguration of 11th Khel Mahakumbh in Gujarat.’ The background matched that of the viral video, and the prime minister is seen wearing the same outfit.

We watched the full video and found Modi speaking about the organisation of the Sports Mahakumbh and the participation of Gujarati youth. However, there was no mention of any investment project by Narayana Murthy.

Murthy’s clip

Using keywords visible in the background of Murthy’s clip, we traced the longer version of the video to the official YouTube channel of the Great Lakes Institute of Management, published on April 3, 2025. In the video, Murthy is seen speaking at the 20th anniversary celebration of the institute in Chennai, where he discusses the theme of building an enduring institution. However, there is no mention of any investment project aimed at helping Indians generate additional income.

Findings of the AI-detector

We ran the audio from the video through Deepfake-O-Meter, an open platform developed by the Media Forensics Lab (MDFL) at the University at Buffalo. Out of seven detectors, three showed strong indicators of AI-generated manipulation in the audio, each scoring over 80 per cent.

Findings of DAU

Our partner, the Deepfakes Analysis Unit (DAU) of the Misinformation Combat Alliance (MCA), concluded that the video was manipulated using AI-generated audio. This finding was based on the results from AI detection tools and assessments by expert partners.

Therefore, we conclude that the video was created by combining clips from two different sources and manipulating the audio of both PM Modi and Murthy using AI-generated voices.
