Fact Check
NewsMeter found that the image has been created by Artificial Intelligence (AI) using an art tool `Midjourney’.
On performing a reverse image search, we found the image carried by an article published by a British daily, I Newspaper. It said the image was created using the AI program Midjourney. It was first shared on a Reddit page dedicated to AI-generated art.
As per a report in BuzzFeed News, the image was created using Midjourney by a 31-year-old construction worker from the Chicago area, Pablo Xavier, who has declined to share his last name out of fear that he could be attacked for creating the images.
The report quoted Xavier saying, “I try to do funny stuff or trippy art — psychedelic stuff. It just dawned on me: I should do the Pope. Then it was just coming like water: ‘The Pope in Balenciaga puffy coat, Moncler, walking the streets of Rome, Paris,’ stuff like that.”
The report also mentioned that Xavier’s account on Reddit has been suspended after his AI-created images of the Pope went viral.
The viral image of Pope Francis wearing a long white-coloured puffer jacket has been created using Artificial intelligence. Hence, we conclude that the viral image is misleading.
