Hyderabad: A video showing Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi speaking about scams, at what looks like a political rally, has gone viral. The video shows Priyanka wanting to talk about the many scams in the country. Then the video cuts to her point of view where she is allegedly flipping through news reports of alleged Congress party scams on the podium. The video ends with her saying that there are too many scams to be listed and she will talk about them later.
The video gives the impression that Priyanka Gandhi, in mid-speech, finds that all scams have been done by Congress and makes an excuse for not talking about them.
An Instagram user shared the video with the caption, “When scam List gone wrong #Justforfun (sic)”
The video has gone viral on YouTube too.
Fact Check
NewsMeter found that the original video was edited to change to context of the video. The original video does not contain the clips of Priyanka supposedly going through news reports on alleged Congress scams.
We ran a relevant keyword search and came across a July 21 report in Free Press Journal titled, “Priyanka Gandhi Tries To Read Out 'Scams' Of BJP Govt But Fails To Find The 'List' in Gwalior Rally.”
It said after the Gandhi scion accused the Shivraj government of scams, she fumbled to find the list on her dais. She skipped that part and told the audience that she will ‘tell about it later’.
Taking this as a cue, we looked for the video on the Congress party’s YouTube channel and found a 32-minute speech published on July 21, titled “Priyanka Gandhi Full Speech | Gwalior | Madhya Pradesh | MP Election.”
The viral clip appears at 14.16 minutes and ends at 14.32 minutes. That section does not show Priyanka flipping through the pages, as seen in the viral video.
In the original, she can be heard saying, “Scams are taking place one after the other. I have a very long list of those scams with me. I will take it out. The list is so long that one cannot even remember all of them.” On not being able to find the list in her document, she ends her point by saying, “I will tell you later as I am not able to find it now.”
Hence, we conclude that the viral video showing Priyanka Gandhi flipping through reports of alleged Congress scams is doctored.
