By Shimron Diana Published on 29 July 2021 5:56 AM GMTHyderabad: A video of purported "Olympic opening ceremony" is going viral on social media.
"Olympic opening ceremony," reads the claim.
Fact Check:
The claim is false as the virally circulated video is not the Olympic opening ceremony. It is New Year's eve in Taipei, Taiwan. Fireworks were set off outside iconic Taipei 101, once the world's tallest building.
NewsMeter using the keyframes of the video tried to find out if the video was posted elsewhere. We came across a YouTube video posted by 'The Lotnictwo.TV ' channel six months ago i.e. 2021 New year's Eve. The YouTube video contained similar visuals.
We also came across another YouTube video posted by 'The Telegraph' channel. The video also had visuals of New Year's eve in Taipei similar to the viral video. Fireworks were set off outside iconic Taipei 101, once the world's tallest building.
Taipei is the capital city and a special municipality of Taiwan (officially the Republic of China). This event of lighting and public gathering took place in Taipei City, Taiwan.
We also came across an article by `travel.taipei', where we found images, which were a part of the viral video. "For a New Year's Eve event with a "once-in-a-lifetime in Asia" feel, the Taipei City Government will organize a series of activities in six of the city's districts (Xinyi, Zhongshan, Wanhua, Beitou, Nangang and Wenshan) throughout December. The City will also be decked out with colorful lights as the most "High" New Year city, with people invited from near and far to experience Taipei's many charms. On December 31, local and foreign artists will perform at the grand New Year's Eve event, with several hundred thousand people expected to enjoy the annual Taipei 101 fireworks show and see the New Year in together," reads the article.
We also came across an article by `taiwannews.com'. "Designed for 360-degrees, the spectacular fireworks show could be viewed from all angles around Taiwan's tallest building. Taipei 101 has been hosting the fireworks event since 2005, and thanks to the country's effective measures to curb the spread of the coronavirus, the municipality gave the green light to the mass gathering to celebrate the new year," it reads.
Conclusion: Hence the claim is false. Viral video is not the Olympic opening ceremony, but it is the New Year's eve in Taipei, Taiwan.
