Telugu actress Sanjjanaa Galrani did not convert to Islam after watching The Kerala Story

Hyderabad: The Indian Muslim Foundation chairman and national spokesperson Shoaib Jamai, in a tweet, claimed that South Indian actress Sanjjanaa Galrani embraced Islam and married a Muslim man, Aziz Pasha, after watching the film ‘The Kerala Story.’
He claimed that the actress went to Saudi Arabia for a Haj pilgrimage and has said she is living a peaceful and happy life.
Mr. Jamai further claimed that Devoleena Bhattacharjee, the co-star in ‘The Kerala Story,’ said marrying Shahanwaz Sheikh was the best decision of her life and that she is happy.
Along with making these claims, Mr. Jamai also shared images of Sanjjanaa Galrani and her family and screenshots of news clippings from The Indian Express and other media outlets.

NewsMeter found that the claims were false. Sanjjanaa Galrani married Aziz Pasha in 2018. The claim that Devoleena Bhattacharjee is the co-actor in ‘The Kerala Story’ is also false.
We ran a keyword search and found the Indian Express report published on 17 May 2023. It said Sanjjanaa was born into a Hindu family and converted to Islam a few years back. She married a doctor named Aziz Pasha.
It also said the actress, known for her Kannada and Telugu films, recently shared an Instagram post about her pilgrimage to Mecca. The post did not go well with many netizens, who criticised her conversion to Islam from Hinduism.
We also found a report by Asianet Newsable from 18 September 2020. It carried an affidavit dated 9 October 2018, which said, “Miss Archana Manohar Galrani shall now be known by her new Muslim name Miss Mahira”. It also mentioned that Miss Mahira “embraced Islam on her own will and accord without any pressure or hindrance from any source whatsoever.”

On checking Sanjjanaa’s Instagram profile, we found that her family photo, which is now viral, was posted on 23 May.

Hence, we conclude that the claims of Sanjjanaa Galrani converting to Islam after watching ‘The Kerala Story’ and Devoleena Bhattacharjee as being the co-actor in the film are false.
