The caption of the viral post loosely read, “One more accident happened, god knows how many died.” The viral post hinted that the video shows another train accident in India similar to the Odisha train tragedy in Balasore in June.

Fact Check

NewsMeter found that the viral claim is false as the video is from Indonesia, not India.

We started our investigation by performing a reverse image search and found a report on the BBC carrying the same visuals as the viral post. The report was titled, “Watch: Fireball as passenger train ploughs into truck in Indonesia.” The report was published on July 19, 2023.

According to the report, the accident happened in Java, Indonesia. One person was injured in the collision and there were no casualties.

We also found similar reports on the viral video by Indian media organisations such as Times Now, India Times and India TV. A video report on the Java train crash could also be seen on the YouTube channel of Sky News Australia.

With this, it is evident that the viral video does not show a train crash in India but in Java, Indonesia.
