There is no 18% GST on cremation services, viral post is fake

A post claiming that the government has imposed an 18% Goods and Service Tax (GST) on cremation services is viral on social media. The post reads, “When you die, think a little and die. There is 18 percent GST on cremation services too!”

Hyderabad: A post claiming that the government has imposed an 18% Goods and Service Tax (GST) on cremation services is viral on social media. The post reads, "When you die, think a little and die. There is 18 percent GST on cremation services too!"

FACT CHECK:

On 29 June 2022, the GST Council made a few recommendations relating to changes in GST rates on the supply of goods and services and changes related to GST law and procedure. One of the changes was the increase in GST from 12 to 18% on the works contracts for crematoriums. There is no mention of 18% GST being levied on cremation services. (Read here)


Further, under 'Schedule III' of the Central GST Act, GST is not applicable to funeral, burial, crematorium, or mortuary services, including transportation of the deceased as they are not treated as supply of goods or supply of services. (Read here)


The Press Information Bureau has also clarified via Twitter that GST is not applicable to cremation services.

It is clear that there is no 18% GST on cremation services. GST is applicable on cremation works contracts.
