Hyderabad: Social media users are sharing several photos with the claim that it shows the recent Maoist attack in Chhattisgarh’s Dantewada.
Gujarat Congress leader Jagdish Thakor shared the photo with the claim that it shows the recent attack in Dantewada.
On 26 April, an IED attack by Maoists killed 10 personnel of the Chhattisgarh police’s District Reserve Guard (DRG) and a civilian driver in the Dantewada district of Chhattisgarh.
Fact Check
NewsMeter found that none of these three photos is from the recent attack on security personnel in Dantewada.
On performing a reverse image search of the first photo, we found it on the stock image website Alamy published on 27 August 2013. As per the description, the photo shows Indian paramilitary soldiers standing near their damaged vehicle after Maoists ambushed their patrol in the Koraput district in Odisha on 27 August 2013. At least five people died and two others were wounded in the attack.
A reverse image search of the second photo led us to a 2019 article by The Scroll which carried the same photo. The image’s description said it shows the wreckage of a vehicle at the IED blast site after the BJP convoy was attacked by Maoists in the Dantewada district of Chhattisgarh on 9 April 2019.
A 2019 report in The Economic Times also carried the image in an article titled “2 Naxals involved in BJP MLA’s killing gunned down in Chhattisgarh.”
On performing a reverse image search of the third photo, we found it published by Alamy on 26 May 2013. As per the description, the photo shows Indian security personnel carrying the body of one of the victims of the Maoist attack which happened on 26 May 2013.
A Firstpost report from 27 May 2013 also carried the image. It said the photo shows security officials carrying an injured person in Chhattisgarh.
Hence, we conclude that the three photos do not show the recent Maoist attack in Chhattisgarh’s Dantewada and the claim is misleading.
